About Cross River Partnership
Central London is one of the world's most exciting, vibrant areas, firmly established as an international venue for business, finance, enterprise, culture, entertainment and sport. The river running through is the backbone of its character - its majestic sweep flanked by some of the most beautiful and historic building in the UK.
Yet the river has also traditionally divided the city - to the north, prosperity, wealth and commerce and to the south the citys utilitarian functions including docks, factories, prisons, pubs and high density housing.
London in the 21st century shares many of the same issues. South of the river are some of the most deprived communities in the country, living opposite the wealth and prosperity of the City and West End. As the city has evolved, the distribution of wealth and deprivation have become more complex, with some areas of intense poverty found literally alongside wealthy enclaves on both sides of the river.
Cross River Partnership, an alliance of 14 partners, was created to make the link between wealth and prosperity in central London and deprived areas and to make the river less of a physical and social barrier. It offers those living in less prosperous areas access to the jobs and opportunities offered by a world-class city and supports the geographical and economic expansion of the capital south of the river.
Formed in 1995, it brings together key players on both sides of the river, including public and private organisations and the four central London local authorities - to the north Westminster City Council and City of London and, to the south, the London boroughs of Southwark and Lambeth.
During its existence, Cross River Partnership has been responsible for more than a hundred projects in, over and around the river, including new bridges and transport routes as well as an economic programme which has helped more then 12,000 residents and smaller business share in Londons growth.
The partnership is committed to:
- Maintaining and strengthening links between key areas on the north and south bank of the Thames;
- Maintaining and strengthening the transformation of the south side of the river as a centre for business, leisure, tourism and residential communities and manage the impact of the transformation;
- Work with residents, businesses and local communities to ensure that they have access to the benefits of regeneration and new employment opportunities.
