CRP's role
Cross River Partnership is a mature regeneration alliance with a track record for success. Each of its partners belongs to this voluntary alliance because they recognise that working beyond their own traditional geographical or political boundaries brings enormous results - not just for them but for the whole of London.
As a partnership, all are working towards the strengthening of links north and south of the river, the extended transformation of the south bank, the best use of resources and making sure that everyone sees the benefits.
Its four central partners are the local authorities on both sides of the river - Southwark and Lambeth to the south and Westminster and the Corporation of London to the north. Each is committed to the partnership in the knowledge that the development of neighbouring areas has a direct impact on its own future. The partnership allows the sharing of best practice and is a lobbying force for central London’s needs. It also co-ordinates regeneration activity, making sure that central London makes greatest use of its regeneration resources.
As well as strategic co-ordination of central London issues, the partnership also delivers projects which make a real difference. In total it is responsible for some 100 projects in, around and over the river.
In the nine years since it formed in 1995, the river has been transformed. Through the partnership, new footbridges link the two banks, new piers provide the structure for improved river services, a new bus service crosses the river dozens of times every day and London now has one of the longest stretches of riverwalk in Europe.
Many of the partnership’s achievements are not quite so visible but equally as important. Thousands of residents have either been supported into jobs or helped with career development, hundreds of businesses work with the partnership and more than 750 community and voluntary groups have received partnership support. More than 100 green an open spaces have been created or improved and difference sectors of the community encourage to work together in worthwhile long-term projects.
All of the partnership’s work creates conditions for economic growth and job creation, proving that the commitment of partners has changed the way people view central London and laid the foundations for long-term growth.
