Cross River Tram is state-of-the-art transport which will ease congestion and provide a long-awaited new link from Camden through central London to Peckham and Brixton.

The route of the Cross River Tram has been carefully selected to give maximum benefit to most people. Some sections will relieve the most overcrowded stretches of the Underground while others will provide rail connections in areas which currently rely on buses. Cross River Tram will carry 9,000 people per hour per direction in peak periods.

Cross River Tram will:

  • Make journeys more pleasant with panoramic windows to open up views.
  • Ease overcrowding on Londons public transport, especially stretches of the Northern, Piccadilly and Victoria lines which are among the most overcrowded in the capital.
  • Help clean-up the capital by providing an environmentally friendly link to the centre of London as a real alternative to cars for trips into and around town.
  • Act as a commercially-attractive spur to greater investment as well as linking regeneration projects valued at more than £7 billion along its route including Kings Cross, Elephant and Castle, Peckham and Brixton.
  • Focus attention on London with an eye-catching asset to tourism and a state-of-the-art transport system that will be the envy of the world.
  • Halve journey times into central London for some sections of the route; allowing people living in some of the most excluded communities in the UK easy access to the jobs and opportunities of central London.
  • Be part of the Oyster system so passengers can hop on and off.

There has been overwhelming public support for the tram. If you would like to add your support, please register as an official supporter by emailing Cross River Partnership at crossriver@lambeth.gov.uk .

Cross River Partnership forCross River Tram

The Cross River Tram concept was originally conceived by Cross River Partnership and reflects the very raison dêtre of our organisation: creating physical and social links between the two sides of the river in central London, breaking down barriers and creating conditions for economic growth. CRP also supports the local authorities working on the project, helping to co-ordinate actions and strategy.

Geographical area

Time frame

The Mayor of London recently announced that due to budgetary constaints certain large-scale transport projects will no longer be taken forward, including Cross River Tram.

The Mayor recognised the merits of Cross River Tram and has proposed work to assess the alternatives solutions. CRP will work with the GLA, TfL, the LDA and the Boroughs to examine other potential funding streams for the Tram project or suitable alternatives. Our priority is to ensure that the transport improvements and local regeneration urgently needed along the original proposed Tram route are provided.
